Important Note When
Using Barley Straw for Ponds:
Barley straw for ponds has become popular with the boom of the
pond and water garden industry.
Many so-called 'experts' claim that barley straw will kill pond algae and
therefore, put bales and bales of barley
straw in their pond. This is not the right thing to do!
Barley straw for ponds is designed to
be used in small, backyard ponds less than 50' x 50' in size.
The barley straw in mesh bags are put in the water flow within the skimmer
or waterfall unit such as our Aquafall.
Barley straw works by
providing certain enzymes, etc. in the water that helps to prevent string
algae from growing.
(String algae looks like long green hair that usually grows on rocks, in
between water lilies, etc.. Although it can look similar to
filamentous algae in some instances, it is NOT the same.)
Barley straw will NOT kill pond algae or string algae.
It merely helps to prevent the string algae from growing in the first place.
String algae grows by spores. You release millions
of spores throughout your pond by pulling the string algae out. The
best
method to killing string algae is to put a specific algaecide in the water
to kill it properly (along with the spores) and then add the
barley straw as a preventative measure. We recommend using Green Clean
for killing the string algae.
You can buy organic barley straw bales
for your pond, barley straw liquid extract and barley straw pellets - all
available on our site. (We
absolutely do not recommend the use of non-organic barley straw bales as the
chemicals, pesticides,
fertilizers, insecticides, etc. that the barley straw is sprayed with can
simply destroy the ecological system within your pond and cause
possible harm or fatalities to your prized fish.)
Some folks want to take the use of barley straw for algae
control to the extremes. They literally put hundreds and hundreds of
pounds
of barley straw and throw it into their large pond or lake thinking that it
will kill the string algae in their pond. This is NOT the way to go
about it!
Adding barley straw to your pond this way will only add to the organic
matter in the pond that's causing the string algae (and other types of algae
and pond weeds) to
grow in the first place! Also, the person most likely doesn't have
string algae but filamentous algae which requires a different treatment
plan. So, don't fall for
this alleged 'treatment plan'! |
